Nigeria’s presidency said Tuesday that an employee of the zoo in the southern city of Gombe, where a giraffe was shot and killed last week, was killed by unknown assailants.
President Muhammadu Buhari issued a statement saying a member of the security forces and the zoo security forces, both Nigerians, were killed and the attacker was still at large.
Buharis statement said the shooting of the giraffe, named Omelu, came about one hour after the zoo’s staff went to check on him.
The statement said Omelou had been shot in the neck and was unconscious when the zoo staff arrived.
The statement said a team of security forces members had been dispatched to the site of the shooting to investigate.
The president’s office said Buhares office had launched a new investigation into the incident.
The president has been in touch with the U.S. embassy in Nigeria, which is assisting the government in the investigation.
